Marie handcrafts leather goods from her original designs in her home workshop on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. She uses buttery soft, locally sourced deerskin and other fine leather to create baby moccasins, purses, backpacks, wallets, and jewelry. Native American made wampum buttons adorn some of her items.
Marie’s Nana from the Island of Sicily, introduced her to the crafts of sewing and handwork when she was a child. Little did she know then that she would be living on another island using the talents her Nana so lovingly shared many years ago.
While earning her BA, Marie taught herself the handcraft of leatherwork and settled into her career as a leather smith in 1975. Her favorite combination is deerskin and turquoise.
